Environment

We have a new strategic objective: reinforce our commitment to protect the environment.
For this Enel is launching a big investment project for research, innovation and development of renewable resources. This also covers communication and information on the environment, since we believe that it is possible to produce energy with contained costs, respecting the environment and helping to reduce the risks of climatic change.

To this end Enel is committed in three main areas:

  • Renewable sources: Investments in new power (1700 MW to be added in 5 years) and innovative projects such as the Archimede solar plant, a renewed commitment to photovoltaic, including small modules, biomasses and biofuels.
  • Energy efficiency and distributed generation: Investments in plants where co-generation and tri-generation are distributed through consolidated and innovative solutions, in energy saving and demotic, in a project that is relevant for the “smart grids”, able to adjust to the needs of distributed generation.
  • "Zero emissions" and hydrogen frontier: To be directed toward the zero emission plant, with demonstrative projects regarding: CO2 capture and sequestration, innovative combustion systems, hydrogen production and employment, including the project concerning the Fusina hydrogen plant.

We intend to become the most advanced energy company in the world in search of innovative solutions to reduce the environmental impact of power production and distribution of electrical energy.

This is an evolution in Enel's mission which involves a conscious so as to respect air quality, water and land. But it is also an ambitious plan, which is realistic and rigorous as regards both the manner and the time in which it allocates investments and also its contribution to the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions. In fact we want to constantly improve our environmental standards and efficiency and to confirm our leadership in renewable sources.

For this objective over the next five years Enel will be developing a large investment programme for over four billion euros, an important part of this will be destined to developing renewable sources, while building about 1700 MW of new plants, to which another relevant investment is devolved to highly innovative new projects. This plan will avoid the emission of over four million tones of CO2 a year.

Vision is essential in energy production. But for Enel it is not just a vision: it is a concrete commitment with few parallels in the world.
